The Gemological Day, convention organised by the Vicenza Fair in collaboration with Cisgem (Public Service for the Regulation of Gem Materials and Precious Metals) and I.G.I. (Italian Gemmological Institute), which has become a regular fixture during the spring edition of Vicenzoro, will this year cover a very up-to-date topic, one that at the same time is “delicate”, “TREATED DIAMONDS: CERTIFICATION”.
Monday 14 May 2007, at 10.30 in the Trissino Room
It is well known that treated diamonds are those subjected to processes that affect the gem’s colour and clarity: these kinds of stone are appearing more and more frequently on the world market and today’s operators must learn to live with them. Besides, it is not an absolute novelty, as many of these treatments have been used for many years; in some cases, like that of radiation, even for a century. These “processes” range from very simple and relatively easy-to-diagnose ones, such as coating, to others that have an effect on the atomic structure of the diamond (high-pressure high-temperature treatment – HPHT), with recognition of the latter requiring highly qualified personnel and tools available only in a very limited number of laboratories in the world.
With the aim of ensuring more transparency on the market and trust and fairness, also where the end consumer is concerned, it is important that these treatments are declared right down the distribution chain, as laid down by the most important international laws. Market players – representatives from Production to Retail as well as gemmological analysis laboratories – and the world of associations, both Italian and international will be taking part in this meaningful appointment for visitors and exhibitors at the Vicenza trade fair. All of them will be given a chance to describe their experience and express their opinion regarding certification for treated diamonds.
This will be followed by a debate to which all convention participants are invited. The aim of this convention is to provide operators with information about a matter that directly involves them, but also to encourage comparison and debate.
The convention is sponsored by Assicor (Chamber of Commerce Association Gold and Silver section) – Italian Association of Craft Goldsmiths – CNA (National Confederation for the Craft Sector and Small and Medium Enterprise) – the Vicenza Chamber of Commerce – Cibjo – Diamond Trading Company – Federpietre (Federation of dealers in diamonds, pearls, precious stones and lapidaries) – Federazione Nazionale Dettaglianti Orafi (National Federation of Gold Retailers) -, Confcommercio (Association of trade, tourism and service activities) – National Federation of Gold Jewellery Wholesalers – Federorafi (Gold Retailers Federation)
